AUA Leadership Transition Announcement

This past Tuesday, July 14, Delbert W. Baker, PhD, announced his permanent return to the United States after completing a five-year tenure (2015-2020) as Vice Chancellor (President) of the Adventist University of Africa (AUA), located outside of Nairobi, Kenya.

AUA is the only General Conference (GC) institution of higher education located on the continent of Africa. It provides graduate ministerial and theological education and professional programs for the three SDA Divisions in Africa—East-Central Africa Division, Southern AfricaIndian Ocean Division, West-Central Africa Division—and beyond to the global Church.

 Dr. Baker and his wife, Dr. Susan Baker, expressed that it has been a privilege and honor to serve the three Divisions at AUA and to work with the talented students, the committed administrators, faculty and staff.

Under Dr. Baker’s leadership, the school has experienced increased enrollment, academic and accreditation successes and enhancements, establishment of a perpetual scholarship endowment and multiple campus improvements. Record fund raising during the five years has resulted in scholarships, academic and outreach projects, campus improvements and the debt-free completion of the beautiful 80,000 sq. ft. Lindsay Thomas, Jr., PhD, Multipurpose Complex, along with a maintenance endowment. The Complex was dedicated in November of 2019. Dr. Blasious Ruguri, Chancellor of AUA, commented that Dr. Baker has “enhanced the facilities and standing of AUA, while promoting educational excellence in Africa and the global community.” Dr. Ella Simmons, General Vice President of the GC and AUA University Council Chair, remarked that “it has been a pleasure to work with Dr. Baker. AUA has experienced historic and outstanding progress under his leadership. The strategic efforts of this administration strengthened the international standing of the University.”

Prior to serving at AUA, Dr. Baker was the President of Oakwood University in Huntsville, Alabama, US, for 14 years and 5 years as a General Vice President at the GC. The Bakers will take up a new line of service on their return to the US in September of this year.
